Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST from an inclusive amount?
Net amount = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000 net and ₹180 GST.
When is CGST + SGST charged, and when IGST?
For a supply within the same state, tax is split equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST). For a supply to another state, the full rate is charged as IGST.
What are the current GST rates?
From 22 September 2025, most goods and services fall under 5% (merit rate) or 18% (standard rate), with a 40% special rate for a small list of luxury and sin goods. Specific items have 0%, 0.25% or 3%. The rate for your item depends on its HSN/SAC code.
