UPSC accepts a single JPG photo of 20–200 KB and a single image containing three of your signatures (20–100 KB). The photo must be recent (no older than 10 days at the start of the application) with a plain white background. UPSC also asks for a live photograph at the exam venue, so the uploaded photo should look like you on exam day.

UPSC FAQs from earlier cycles mention 20–300 KB and 350–1000 px. The current portal instructions (20–200 KB photo, 20–100 KB signature) are used here. The output size we produce (600×600 photo, 500×500 signature) sits inside both ranges.

UPSC CSE-specific tips

  • Take the photo in daylight facing a window, against a white wall; avoid flash glare on spectacles.
  • For the signature image, sign three times one below the other on plain white paper, using a black ball-point pen.
  • Keep the file name simple (e.g. photo.jpg) and the format JPG; PNG or HEIC from iPhone will be rejected.
  • Use the same photo across all UPSC applications in the cycle to avoid mismatch flags.

Common reasons UPSC CSE uploads get rejected

  • Photo older than 10 days, or with cap, goggles or a coloured background.
  • Signature image containing only one signature, or signed in capital letters.
  • File above 200 KB (photo) or 100 KB (signature), or below 20 KB.
  • Blurred or dark image where the face is not clearly visible.
